Overview of Status: Early in 2010 University of Delaware researchers released a study of the potential for offshore wind development in Maryland. The Maryland Energy Administration released a Request for Expression of Interest in offshore wind development.
Proposed Projects: In September 2009 the Maryland Energy Administration issued a Request for Expression of Interest in offshore wind development. The RFEI is available here.
Policy and Regulation: Maryland has a RPS of 20% renewable by 2022. The state has a Clean Energy Production Tax Credit of 0.85 cents per kWh for wind power produced by facilities operational on or before January 1, 2011. Click here to see a MEA web page about this tax credit. The Maryland Energy Administration has an Energy Facts and Programs webpage dealing specifically wind wind power in the state. While most of the information is directed toward land based wind development, some of the programs may be applicable to offshore wind.
Studies, Research and Development: Sponsored by the Abell Foundation, researchers at the University of Delaware conducted a study titled Maryland's Offshore Wind Power Potential. The report was released February 1, 2010. The state energy administration is conducting an offshore wind feasibility study which will include Marine Spatial Planning work done by both the MEA and The Nature Conservancy. |
