Overview of Status: While California has substantial offshore wind resources, the depth of water off the California coast would likely require floating turbines. Stanford researchers conducted a study of the state's potential for offshore wind development.

Studies, Research and Development: Researchers in the Stanford University Civil and Environmental Engineering Department conducted a study in 2007 titled California Offshore Wind Energy Potential. The study concluded that despite steep bathymetry, significant wind development potential exists off the California coast, particularly with new floating platform designs. The report projects that offshore wind development in California will not begin for another 15-20 years. |
